(TEAM  #2November/December 2002)

YES. In Bangladesh the government wants to ban mobile phones for under sixteen-year-old because they might cause brain damage. They are more dangerous for teenagers than they are for adults because teenagers’ skulls are thinner. Also, many teenagers in the UK have their phones stolen. This could be a very frightening experience.

NO. In fact, mobile phones are good for young people! British teenagers used to carry a packet of cigarettes, now they carry a mobile phone. The time that they used to spend smoking, they now spend talking. British teenagers are smoking less so mobile phones are healthy! Also, a lot of parents feel that their kids are safer if they carry a mobile phone.

 Task 1

Should schools start later to allow teenagers more sleep?

(TEAM  #3 January/February 2003)
In the USA some schools are starting classes at 10 am to give their teenage students extra time in bed in the morning.
YES. Although teenagers need about ten hours sleep a night, most only get about seven hours. People produce a “darkness hormone” called melatonin, which makes us feel sleepy. One study showed that adults start making this hormone at 11 pm but teenagers start making it at 1 am. This explains why many teenagers like to stay up late and can’t get up in the morning. One school in the USA, which started classes later, noticed that the schoolwork of teenage pupils improved.
NO. Starting school late encourages teenagers to be lazy. Teenagers often stay up late playing computer games or watching television. Computer games are bright and stimulating. No wonder, teenagers find it difficult to sleep at night. If teenagers need more sleep, they should take lots of exercise and go to bed earlier. Also, teenagers need to fit in with their families. They may have working parents or young brothers or sisters who must leave the house early.

Task 1

Should girls be allowed to wear Britney-style clothes to school?

(TEAM  #4 March 2003)
Some schools in America are going to ban jeans with low waists and t-shirts that show the tummy from school.
YES. Britney looks very nice so it’s not surprising that many teenagers want to look like her. Fashion and image are very important to teenagers. Teenagers have to follow many rules set by parents and teachers so their clothes are a way for them to express their personalities. Anyway, the clothes that you wear don’t change the way that you study at school.
NO. Fashionable clothes at school can cause competition and fights between students. Teenagers have enough pressure on them already. The pressure on girls to dress like pop stars for school is unnecessary and silly. School is a place for concentration and study. Students should wear simple clothes to school. If they want to look like Britney Spears, they can do so after school.

 Task 1

Is it worth getting a job when you’re a teenager?

(TEAM  #4 March 2004)
We all know that teenagers need money! Your pocket money isn’t enough to pay for your mobile calls, the new CDs you need and going out with your friends in the evening. So, what do you do? Ask your parents to give you more money? Or get a part-time job? That’s what 1.1 million schoolchildren in the UK do… And they are paid less than adults! Is it fair?
But should young people be working at all? Most teenagers are already very busy. Schools give them a lot of homework and many have important exams to prepare for. Besides, it’s important for teenagers to have time for social life and to do their hobbies. Having a job can make young people too tired to do their schoolwork.

                                                                               Television.

(OUP, Streetwise Intermediate WB, p.36)
The general opinion about television is that it is terrifically exciting, immensely powerful, and potentially very dangerous.
Undoubtedly television has advantages. First of all, it has the power to educate. What is more, it is a cheap form of entertainment.
However, some people argue that television is so powerful that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Although it can turn children into professors, it can also turn them into criminals. Furthermore, some people argue that television has had a terrible effect on family life. People no longer talk to each other, they don’t go out together.
What do YOU think about television? How often do YOU watch TV?
